The 2026 AI Graduate Degree Report
Last updated: May 2026
Original data on 2,439 AI, machine learning, data science, and cybersecurity graduate programs across 729 universities in the United States — the most comprehensive picture of AI graduate education available.
Executive Summary
AI Graduate's 2026 program database covers 2,439 verified graduate and undergraduate programs in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and related fields across 729 accredited US universities. This report presents the most detailed quantitative picture of AI graduate education available — by state, degree level, delivery format, and specialization.
The dominant degree type is the master's degree, which accounts for 1,303 programs (53% of the total). Online and hybrid delivery now represents 64% of all programs — a dramatic shift from pre-2020 norms — reflecting both student demand for flexibility and institutional investment in remote education infrastructure.
California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania host the largest concentrations of AI programs, driven by major research university systems, tech industry proximity, and population density. However, programs are now available in all 50 states, with Midwest and Southern universities rapidly expanding their AI program offerings to meet regional workforce demand.

Delivery Format: The Online Revolution
64% of AI graduate programs in our database now have an online or hybrid delivery component — a figure that has grown dramatically since 2020. Fully online programs now compete directly with on-campus programs for enrollment, and major employers report no meaningful distinction in hiring outcomes between the two formats for established universities.

Programs by State — Top 20
California leads all states with more AI programs than any other — reflecting the state's concentration of research universities (UC system, Stanford, Caltech, USC) and the world's largest tech industry cluster. New York and Texas follow, each home to major research universities and growing tech sectors. States like Massachusetts (home to MIT, Harvard, and Boston University) punch above their weight relative to population.

Top Specializations
Machine learning remains the most common specialization across all degree types, appearing in some form in the majority of AI-focused programs. Deep learning, natural language processing, and computer vision have grown significantly as standalone specializations since 2022 — driven by the generative AI boom and explosion of LLM applications. Data engineering and MLOps specializations are newer but fast-growing, reflecting enterprise demand for AI deployment skills.

Methodology
AI Graduate's program database is compiled from direct university website research, official program pages, accreditation databases (SACSCOC, HLC, MSCHE, WASC, NECHE), and graduate school catalogs. Programs are included if they: (1) are offered by a regionally accredited US institution; (2) focus primarily on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, cybersecurity, or a directly related technical field; and (3) have an active admissions process.
Data is reviewed and updated regularly. Degree type, format, cost, state, and specialization data are sourced from official program pages. Cost data represents total estimated program cost where available, or is estimated from per-credit-hour rates and typical program length. Costs are approximate and may not include fees, housing, or living expenses.
